6 – Why is the ANVT-ILRF urging the government to allow West Flemish courses ?

All the member associations of the Institut de la Langue Régionale Flamande have always claimed, or supported the claim for, West Flemish courses at school because they regard our regional language as an important part of our Flemish culture. Regional languages are decreasinly passed on from parents to children in Western countries because of the strain of official languages upon all parts of society. The protection of regional languages as part of French cultural heritage is now a provision of the French Constitution (art. 75-1). It cannot be ensured without courses in the educational system aiming at the younger generations.

We also urge a fair treatment in the implementation of the policies related to regional languages in France.
